Worldwide, approximately 42 million tons of soy bean oil, 25 million tons of rapeseed oil and 12 million tons of sunflower oil are produced and the number is increasing. Providing high-quality certified seed in connection with the reduction of post-harvest losses has the highest priority in oilseed production in order to meet the rising demand. Some countries book a post-harvest loss of around 40%, partially caused by an improper processing chain.

The irregular maturation of most oilseeds, as well as the exposed position of the embryo place particularly high demands on the processing technology. Sorting of seeds is hampered by the dark colors of rape and sunflower seeds, which are also often infested with dark fungi (e.g. Sclerotinia in sunflower). Technology for oilseeds must be highly precise but also extremely gentle in the handling of the seeds.
